As for today's lesson, we recapped again with how we answer an exam question and the structure that needs to be followed to achieve an efficient grade. For example, all the different viewings that need to be considered throughout, such as Camera, Mise en Scene, Sound, Editing and Representation. All of these involve an acronym to help within the exam, such as DISTINCT, DRCAGES, CLAMPS, FAM and STOPS.
TV Sub-Genre Dramas
1. TEEN DRAMA
Examples of Teen Dramas consist of 90210, Once upon a Time, Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. All of these Teen Dramas are mainly on Netflix which is aimed towards an audience that watch their TV on all different types of devices, as Netflix is available on a TV, Laptop, Phone and PC. Teen Dramas don't usually involve any rude language or explicit scenes that could offend a younger audience. This is normally aimed towards a specific type of audience as opposed too different types of TV Dramas such as Costume Drama.
2. PERIOD/COSTUME DRAMA
There is a variety of different costume drama's such as Downtown Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, Upstairs Downstairs and MadMen. Downtown Abbey is a specific type of TV programme that is significantly aimed towards a range of an audience. It isn't a category that a whole group of different audiences will watch together. This type of programme is usually watched individually and is discussed among peers that watch it also.
3. POLICE/CRIME DRAMA
Types of Police/Crime dramas involve, Broadchurch, Making a Murderer and The Bill. The Bill is now an older series that is no longer aired on the TV however it can be viewed online on some websites. Where as Broadchurch is still available on different Broad Bands and was brought back after a huge success. These examples of this type of drama all vary with their topic types, which is why Police/Crime dramas are frequently watched by a variety of audiences as they normally have different storylines, including different themes each episode too keep people intrigued.
4. MEDICAL/HOSPITAL DRAMA
Casualty, Holby City, ER and Greys Anatomy are all different examples of Medical/Hospital dramas. With medical dramas, these are popular too an audience wanted too experience a type of reality and too understand terms that occur within surgery. Also within these types of dramas, they are fast paced and an event occurs every episode, for example, someone going into A&E, or a partial update on a patient that is key within the programme.
Representation examples..
Gossip Girl
Class- Within Gossip Girl the class is the highlighted factor throughout the costume, setting, language, and the characters. This is shown through the costume as many of them come from a fortunate background, and they wear designer clothing, many of which express and use too their advantage. There is also class represented through the settings and locations in comparison of the characters and where they live. For example, Blair (one of the main characters) lives in a mansion on the upper east side, comparing too, Dan who lives on the alternative of the old-moneyed and conservative Upper East Side, and is looked down upon as the series carry out.
Age- Most of the characters within this programme are around the same age group. The main age that is focused on throughout is the teenagers, with the second age being their parents. However, although the focus is on the middle generation, there are a few babies introduced although, they aren't the focus, as the main setting that involves age is high school.
Gender- There is an equal variety of gender roles played throughout the whole series. There is no dominance of gender that tries to suggest innocence or power. Almost everyone is in a relationship at one point.
